Tolkien is reputed to have sat under these trees where he gained inspiration for his stories about Middlearth. Whilst painting unobtrusively at the side in a quiet spot off the main path, perhaps for an hour and a half in all , it was surprising to observe the different reactions of many people visiting and pausing the trees. These four trees do appear have an extraordinary power to stimulate peoples imaginations.
