Snow at Little Cheverall

Snow at Little Cheverall Oil on Panel
The snows of 2011, I did several paintings. The cold landscape had a Russian feel to me. I think I’d just discovered the Russian painter, Isaac Levitan, who did groundbreaking work with his plein air impressionistic style at the time, I could really relate to him.

This view is always ‘Timeless’. It doesn’t feel like Britain, more like Mediterranean Islands, yet echoing to ancestral memories of a distant Celtic age and mystery.

Vale of Pewsey from Etchilhampton

Vale of Pewsey from Etchilhampton – Oil on Canvas
This is an amazing place to standl; one gets a sense of the vast open space to the surrounding hills to the North and East. Next time I’ll take a wider canvas to capture more of that space.

Avebury Beech Trees

Avebury Beech Trees 1 – 31 x 31 cm Oil on Panel
Tolkien is reputed to have sat under these trees where he gained inspiration for his stories about Middlearth.   Whilst painting unobtrusively at the side in a quiet spot off the main path, perhaps for  an hour and a half in all , it was surprising to observe the different reactions of many people visiting and pausing the trees. These four trees do appear have an extraordinary power to stimulate peoples imaginations.
